Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis has been correctly characterized as a silent epidemic, as it affects males and females, usually after the age of 50 and is of grave importance as it can lead to osteoporotic fractures, which result in significant disability and mortality, while heavily burdening the economy of national health systems.

Tdhe main osteoporotic fractures are those of the vertebral column, hip ((subcapital and intertrochanteric ) and appendicular skeleton (mainly the wrist). Osteoporotic fractures of the vertebral column lead to serious problems (pain, disability, gastrointestinal problems, lack of self esteem, breathing complications and increased mortality) and are treated surgically, using the method of kyphoplasty, which requires a single day of hospital admission, is performed without general anesthesia, is bloodless and doesn’t require bedrest or the use of a brace. Overall, it alleviates from pain and restores the original vertebral height.

Osteoporotic fractures of the hip are correlated with high mortality and inability and require quick treatment, as usually commorbidities do exist. Special surgical techniques and materials are required, while cooperation with a highly specialized team of physiotherapists is required. The treatment of fractures of the appendicular skeleton requires specialization and knowledge of the novel surgical techniques that aim to restore movement and improve the quality of life of the patient. Pharmacological treatment is unarguably important; the medication can be either antiosteoclastic or ostosynthetic. Additionally, calcium and vitamin D can also help the patient. Exercise, along with a controlled and healthy diet, are essential for the treatment of osteoporosis.

The surgeon is a founding member of EEMMO (Assossiation for the Control and Study of Bone Metabolism), member of the Council (2012-2014), member of ELIOS (Hellenic institute for osteoporosis) and member of ISMNI. He has given many oral presentations in the past and has published numerous pieces of work, in the field of osteoporosis and metabolic diseases.
